Scott McTominay's transfer from Manchester United to Napoli in the summer of 2024 is now widely regarded as one of the English club's most significant blunders in recent memory, especially after the midfielder's sensational debut season in Italy, where he was named Serie A MVP for 2024/25.
The Scottish international's impressive development led Marco Materazzi, Italy's 2006 World Cup winner, to label the deal "the biggest transfer mistake of all time."
In an interview with Hajper, the former Inter defender showered praise on the midfielder, revealing himself to be a long-time admirer. "I love Scott McTominay. When he broke through at Manchester United as a youngster, I laughed because I told my son that even at 18 or 19, this is a player who would become one of the best in the world, and now he is one of the best."
The Red Devils sold their academy graduate to the Southern Italian club for approximately 30 million euros, a decision justified at the time by the club's need to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations. However, McTominay's immediate success in Italy, where he helped Napoli clinch the Scudetto and shone with numerous decisive moments, has cast a long shadow over the assessment made at Old Trafford.
Materazzi believes the player's value was drastically underestimated. "He's an incredible box-to-box player. I don't understand how Man. United sold him for next to nothing, because his value, for me, is 60 to 70 million euros or more. Is this one of the biggest transfer mistakes we've ever seen? I think so, absolutely."
McTominay made his senior debut for Manchester United in 2017, accumulating 255 appearances in total, winning an FA Cup and a League Cup. His resurgence in Italy, where he has become a prolific goalscorer, earned him a Ballon d'Or nomination, intensifying criticism of United's sporting management, which continues to see academy players thrive elsewhere while expensive signings fail to meet expectations.
Despite a less successful season for Napoli, who currently sit second in Serie A, seven points behind leaders Inter, McTominay remains a pivotal figure. He is the team's second-highest scorer in the league with seven goals, adding four more in the Champions League.
When questioned about his future and rumors of a potential transfer, the Scot expressed his full commitment to the Italian club. "I'm extremely happy here. As far as I'm concerned, I'm a Napoli player. That's what I'm thinking about. I can see myself here for a long time. I love this place... my family is happy, and I'm happy."
