The Switzerland national team has reached the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in 72 years. Murat Yakin's squad defeated Colombia in a Round of 16 clash at the 2026 World Cup, securing their spot in the next phase of the tournament after a goalless draw in regular time and extra time, followed by a 4-3 victory in the penalty shootout.
The Swiss last played in a World Cup quarterfinal in 1954, when they hosted the competition. Since then, they have been eliminated in the group stage three times and have exited the tournament at the Round of 16 on five occasions.
