Supercomputer: Arsenal to Defend Title

With the Premier League season fast approaching, the supercomputer from popular statistics site "Opta" predicts Arsenal will defend their title in the 2026-27 campaign. Mikel Arteta's side ended a 22-year wait for the championship crown last season, as the Gunners edged out Manchester City after finishing second for three consecutive years prior.

Arteta aims to become only the fourth manager in Premier League history to successfully defend the title, following Sir Alex Ferguson, José Mourinho, and Pep Guardiola.

According to Opta's supercomputer, which ran 10,000 data-driven season simulations, Arsenal are clear favorites with a 38% chance of lifting the trophy again in May. In comparison, last year Liverpool had a 28.5% chance to defend their title under Arne Slot, but the Reds ultimately finished fifth.

However, William Saliba's back injury poses a concern for Arsenal. Statistics show that the Gunners' Premier League win percentage drops from 68.7% to 47.6% when the Frenchman is unavailable.

Manchester City is tipped as Arsenal's most likely competitor, despite the departure of legendary manager Pep Guardiola. Enzo Maresca's team has a 20.5% chance of triumph after a summer of changes, with Elliot Anderson being their most significant £116 million signing. However, there's a possibility that Rodri might follow Bernardo Silva and also leave the club.

Liverpool is the third most likely champion with a 9.2% chance, even though new manager Andoni Iraola admitted during pre-season that his team currently "cannot maintain the level we want."

Following the Reds are their rivals Manchester United, with Michael Carrick's side given a 6.2% chance to win the league.

Despite Aston Villa selling Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for a British transfer record of £117 million and parting ways with Youri Tielemans, who moved to Manchester United, Unai Emery's team is the fifth favorite with 4.8%. Villa narrowly edges out Chelsea under new manager Xabi Alonso, whose chances are rated at 4.1%. The Blues will have an easier schedule as they are not participating in European competitions this season.

A similar situation applies to Tottenham, who are given a 2.9% chance for the title under Roberto De Zerbi. The Spurs were among the most active in the transfer market this summer, bringing in Sandro Tonali and Matheus Fernandes for £100 million and £85 million respectively. These expenditures come after two consecutive seasons where Tottenham finished 17th, only securing their top-flight status on the final day.

At the other end of the table, it's no surprise that the three newly promoted teams are considered the most likely candidates for an immediate return to the Championship. Hull City, who came up through the playoffs, is identified as the most endangered by relegation with 38.7%. Ipswich and Coventry follow with 31.2% and 27.9% respectively.

However, the three clubs can draw inspiration from Sunderland. Last season, the Black Cats were tipped as the most likely to finish last, but ultimately qualified for European competitions after a memorable campaign. Sunderland's participation in the Europa League and their limited transfer activity this summer could impact their performance. Last season's statistics show they had the third-lowest expected goals from open play, while conceding the third-highest number of shots and fourth-highest number of shots on target in the top flight.

Fulham is the next endangered club with a 23.4% chance of relegation, after a summer in which Marco Silva departed and was replaced by Álvaro Arbeloa. Leeds United and Crystal Palace follow with 22.5% and 20% respectively. Nottingham Forest and Brentford are next with 18.1% and 16.3%, followed by Everton and Bournemouth with 13.6% and 13.1%.
