Steven Gerrard: Wirtz Lacks Confidence, Looks Like a Completely Different Player for Germany
Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has shared his thoughts on Florian Wirtz's underwhelming start to life on Merseyside. The former Reds captain acknowledged that the Germany international has yet to live up to the lofty expectations surrounding his arrival, but expressed confidence that the midfielder has the quality to turn things around.
"I'm not denying that he is underperforming and that, given the transfer fee paid for him, he should have shown a lot more. However, I believe he still has every chance – we've seen players in similar situations completely turn things around," Gerrard said.
"Wirtz has enough talent to change the narrative, but his confidence at Liverpool right now is at zero. You can clearly see it when watching him live. He loses possession in routine situations where he would normally never make a mistake. For the German national team, though, I see a completely different player. There, he plays with his head held high, brings a totally different energy, constantly demands the ball, attacks open spaces, creates assists, and scores goals," Gerrard added.
"We saw that exact class at Bayer Leverkusen too. Yes, the level is different, but right now we're seeing an entirely different footballer. I think it all boils down to confidence and the price tag hanging over him," the Merseyside icon concluded.
