Long-standing interest in Morten Hjulmand's potential move from Sporting to Atlético Madrid has intensified in recent hours, with significant progress made in a transfer saga that began last summer.

A BOLA has learned that the current Sporting captain has reached a personal agreement with the Spanish club for a transfer during this window. The next step involves the Colchoneros initiating negotiations with Sporting.

It's worth noting that the Danish international's release clause, part of a contract with the Lions valid until 2028, stands at €80 million. However, a tacit agreement has been in place for a year, allowing for the midfielder's departure for a lower fee, estimated between €40 million and €50 million.

Hjulmand joined Sporting in 2023 from Italian side Lecce for €18 million (plus an additional €3 million in add-ons). He subsequently inherited the captain's armband from Seba Coates.

In Spain, Hjulmand's transfer is being viewed as Atlético's first major move of the summer market, and the first under Mateu Alemany as Director of Professional Football, a role he assumed in October. Alemany was also involved in the acquisition of Lookman during the winter transfer window.
