Chelsea has secured Jesse Derry with a long-term contract extension, fending off interest from European giants Bayern Munich and Juventus. This move aims to retain the highly-rated youngster. Thanks to their strong relationship with Sporting CP, from whom they acquired Quenda and Essugo last year (with Quenda remaining at Alvalade until the season's end), Chelsea will now loan the winger to the Portuguese club.
However, the Blues have taken precautions: the loan agreement is straightforward and does not include a purchase option. Recognizing Sporting as a leading youth development academy in Europe, the London club opted for a loan to a trusted partner, ensuring their asset continues to develop in a competitive environment.
Sporting, in turn, gains a left-wing option, addressing the departures of Faye, who is not in Rui Borges' plans, and Pedro Gonçalves, who has attracted significant international interest.
According to A BOLA, the 19-year-old English youth international is expected to join the squad traveling to Lagos, in the Algarve, for their pre-season training camp. This will allow him to integrate quickly into the Lions' routines.
Second-Generation Talent
Born on June 30, 2007, Jesse Derry is a winger/attacking midfielder, and the son of former Crystal Palace, Leeds, and Queens Park Rangers player Shaun Derry. He was born in Harrogate during his father's time at Leeds.
He began his football journey at Crystal Palace's academy at the age of five. In the 2023/2024 season, he was named the club's U18 Player of the Year after scoring 16 goals in 22 appearances.
Last July, he signed a four-year deal with Chelsea. His impressive performances earned him call-ups to England's U17, U18, and U19 national teams. Last summer, he scored two goals in the U19 European Championship, and despite England's group stage exit, he was a standout performer.
While primarily a left-winger, Jesse Derry is ambidextrous and can also play on the right or as an attacking midfielder. His strong displays for the Blues' youth teams led to call-ups for some first-team matches: he played the first 45 minutes in a 2-1 Premier League loss to Nottingham Forest; he also came off the bench against Wrexham (4-2 on penalties) and Hull City (4-0), both in the FA Cup.
Notably, his Chelsea first-team debut was marred by an incident that sent him to the hospital after a head collision with Nottingham Forest's Abbott.
