Medical reports on the Frenchman show that the 25 year-old is in a critical but stable condition after suffering a diffuse axonal injury; describing trauma that is spread across the brain, rather than in one place, and is caused by the shockwave from a sudden impact. Experts say recovery rates are not encouraging.

Bianchi’s parents, Philippe and Christine have been at his hospital bedside at the Mie General Medical Centre in Yokkaichi since the crash, and they were joined by his brother and sister, Tom and Melanie on Thursday; the driver’s best friend Lorenz Leclerc and other relatives also joined them
