Spanish coach Santi Denia is the leading candidate to become the new head coach of the Czech Republic national football team, according to media reports from the Iberian Peninsula. Spanish daily AS and other local publications suggest Denia is set to replace Miroslav Koubek, who stepped down after the team's disappointing performance at the World Cup in North America. Koubek reportedly struggled to manage the dressing room, lacking the authority to motivate players, with several allegedly refusing to take the field in certain matches. As a result, the Czechs exited the 2026 World Cup with a draw against South Africa and losses to Mexico and South Korea. If Denia takes the helm, it would mark the first time in Czech football history that a foreign coach leads the national side. The 51-year-old specialist previously managed Al Shahaniya in the Qatari league last year and has been unattached since.
However, local media remain skeptical about whether the former Spain U23 Olympic team coach will ultimately secure the position. The portal idnes.cz reports that his appointment is not yet certain, as there is no consensus within the Football Association's Executive Committee, which is scheduled to meet in August. According to reports, at least five members of the Executive Committee are opposed to hiring an expensive foreign coach. They believe that the current pool of players would not yield significantly different results regardless of who is in charge. “He is very similar to Luis de la Fuente, the current coach of Spain. They worked together for 14 years in the Spanish federation, both progressing through youth selections and achieving success with them. Denia also has a reputation as a great coach and mentor,” Alex Sanchez, a Spanish video analyst for second-division club Usti nad Labem, told idnes.cz.
