Louw sustained the injury during the Springboks' 14-10 reverse to New Zealand last Saturday and the 29-year-old could now miss up to eight weeks of action.

Coach Heyneke Meyer revealed his disappointment at losing the forward ahead of the remaining two fixtures with Australia and New Zealand.

"This is another set-back as we prepare to host Australia and New Zealand in two very important matches," he said.

"Francois has been superb for us in the last couple of seasons."

Louw joins scrum-half Ruan Pienaar on the sidelines, with the 30-year-old to miss between four and six weeks with a medial cruciate ligament injury.

South Africa are set to name Louw's replacement in the 30-man squad in the coming days.
