Steyn dismissed Tamim Iqbal (6) - caught by Hashim Amla at first slip in the fifth over on day one at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur - on the opening day of what is his 80th Test match.

The 32-year-old took the fewest number of deliveries of any of the 13 members of the 400 club, and joins England seamer James Anderson (406) and India spinner Harbhajan Singh (416) as only the third active player to reach the landmark.

Shaun Pollock (421) is the only other South African to have taken 400 Test scalps.

Former Proteas skipper Graeme Smith was among those to pay tribute to Steyn.
