Severe Williams injury shocks Oklahoma City: Is the season already over for Thunder star?
Williams suffered the injury in the closing stages of the game when, following a drive to the basket, he landed awkwardly and came down with his full weight on his left ankle. The harrowing scene immediately indicated a severe injury, and initial assessments suggest the season could already be over for one of Oklahoma City's key players.
Analyzing footage of the incident, sports physician Dr. Brian Sutterer stated that the most likely diagnosis is an ankle dislocation, without ruling out a potential fracture.
"Based on what we see, the most probable scenario is an ankle dislocation, potentially accompanied by a fracture. In rare cases, a joint can dislocate without a fracture, but in most instances, a fracture is present as well," Dr. Sutterer explained.
He noted that while an isolated fracture is possible, a combination of both represents a serious possibility given the mechanism of injury.
According to Sutterer, regardless of the final diagnosis, Williams is almost certainly facing a prolonged recovery. The best-case scenario would mean a multi-month absence, while a more severe outcome could sideline him for the remainder of the season.
However, the timeline is not the doctor's only concern; he also fears such an injury could be career-altering. He drew comparisons to the devastating injury suffered by Gordon Hayward during his season opener with the Boston Celtics several years ago.
"Regardless of the exact combination of injuries, trauma this severe typically requires months of rehabilitation. Even if it turns out to be purely a dislocation without a fracture, I would still expect a substantial period on the sidelines," Sutterer emphasized.
The setback comes at a devastating time for Williams, who was looking forward to a strong campaign following an injury-plagued 2025/26 season. He was limited to just 33 regular-season appearances last year due to chronic right wrist problems and hamstring strains in both legs.
