Serena Williams' return to the professional circuit is taking shape, with another tournament added to her schedule. The 44-year-old American tennis star is set to compete in the WTA 500 Berlin, running from June 15 to 21, after receiving a wild card entry from the organizers.
This announcement follows the confirmation of her participation in the doubles draw at the WTA 500 Queen's, where she will partner with Victoria Mboko.
According to the German tournament organizers, the invitation to Berlin also includes the doubles competition, although her partner has not yet been determined.
Her return to the German capital comes 18 years after her last appearance in 2008. The former world number one expressed her excitement about the opportunity. "Every tournament I add to my schedule right now is special, and Berlin is no exception. I'm looking forward to playing in front of the German crowd and continuing my momentum throughout the grass-court season," the tennis player stated.
Tournament director Andrea Petkovic, in turn, celebrated the news, which further enriches an already strong player field. "I didn't think our exceptional lineup, featuring nine top-10 players, could be surpassed. But welcoming Serena Williams to Berlin is pure joy. It's hard to do better!" she declared.
For many experts, the 44-year-old Serena Williams is determined to make a surprising comeback at Wimbledon, where she has won six of her 23 Grand Slam titles. The world's most iconic grass-court tournament takes place from June 29 to July 12.
