Driving his Volkswagen Polo R, Ogier won the first run by 1.2 seconds over Spaniard Dani Sordo of Hyundai and the second by 0.6 seconds from Volkswagen II's Andreas Mikkelsen.

Neuville sits in second after winning the 1.09km street stage which opened the third round of the FIA World Rally Championship, beating Italian Lorenzo Bertelli (Ford) and Ogier by 0.1 and 0.3 seconds respectively, before running third in both of the super special stages.

While content with his situation, reigning world champion Ogier knows there is plenty of work left to do if he is to stay ahead over the next three days of the event.

"It's not a big lead but it's better than nothing," he said.

"Everything counts and we have done our job tonight, now we're looking forward to the real start of the rally tomorrow."

The rally moves from the city to rural gravel tracks on day two, with Ogier and Neuville leading from the former's Volkswagen team-mate Jari-Matti Latvala (+3.3), Mikkelsen (+3.8) and Sordo (+4.1).
