Paul Scholes has urged Manchester United to appoint Antonio Conte if the club decides to part ways with Michael Carrick. The Red Devils legend believes the Italian tactician is by far the superior choice among the candidates being considered, although he warned that the appointment carries major risks given Conte's volatile temperament.
"You have to pick a manager who you believe can get the team back competing for the Premier League title. Out of the three, I'd go with Antonio Conte, but with one massive warning. He's dropped hints that he wants the job, and I'm fairly certain the club has spoken to all three. I can't quite understand why he'd want it, though, because in my opinion, the squad isn't good enough for him," Scholes said.
The former midfielder also pointed to Unai Emery as a viable alternative. He praised the Spaniard's impressive work at Aston Villa, particularly his ability to maintain high performance levels despite having to sell star players. However, Scholes remains convinced that Conte is the standout option for Old Trafford.
"When you talk about top-tier, elite managers, Conte is streets ahead of the rest. Look at what he did at Juventus, and then going to Napoli and winning the title. I know he's hot-headed and can be crazy, but when it comes to proven winners at big clubs, he's a cut above. I don't care if it's only a short-term fix. If he stays for 18 months and puts United back in title contention, that's a success. Conte needs to come in and shake that dressing room up," added the former United star.
