World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka lived up to her top billing, securing her spot in the Roland Garros quarterfinals on Monday with a straight-sets victory over Japan's Naomi Osaka, 7-5, 6-3.
In a highly anticipated clash on Court Philippe-Chatrier, Sabalenka faced stiff resistance from Osaka, particularly in the opening set. The former world No. 1 managed to keep rallies competitive and pressured the Belarusian for much of the initial frame. However, Sabalenka's superior consistency in crucial moments proved decisive, allowing her to close out the set 7-5.
In the second set, the reigning Australian Open champion elevated her game and took control. With a powerful serve and aggressive groundstrokes, Sabalenka secured a vital break and built a comfortable lead. Osaka attempted to mount a comeback but couldn't counter her opponent's dominance, as Sabalenka sealed the match 6-3 in just under an hour and a half.
Sabalenka keeps her title aspirations alive in Paris, reinforcing her status as one of the tournament's top favorites. She is set to face World No. 25 Diana Shnaider on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, Osaka exits Roland Garros after a positive campaign, which showcased her improved performance on clay.
