Formula 1 is expected to return to the African continent in 2030, with an official announcement widely anticipated in the coming weeks.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame (pictured) has made serious efforts in recent years to convince the FIA and Formula 1 that his nation can successfully stage a World Championship round. In 2024, Rwanda hosted the FIA General Assembly alongside the federation's annual Prize Giving Ceremony, where Kagame used the occasion to formally announce the country's bid for a Grand Prix.

With no permanent racing circuit currently in Rwanda, Kagame's declaration was initially met with scepticism, though it subsequently emerged that plans are underway to build a dedicated motorsport venue.

The facility is set to be constructed roughly 40 kilometres outside the capital city of Kigali, near Bugesera International Airport. The track and wider complex will be designed by former Formula 1 driver Alex Wurz's design studio.

Formula 1 has not raced in Africa since 1993, when the South African Grand Prix was last held at the Kyalami circuit.
