Wayne Rooney has warned Michael Carrick that Bruno Fernandes' growing frustration could quickly become a major issue for Manchester United. The Portuguese captain made no effort to hide his discontent following the 1-1 draw with Tottenham, as a difficult start to the campaign continues to ramp up the pressure at Old Trafford. The Red Devils have managed just one win from their opening six Premier League fixtures.
"He's just drained by it all. I really think he looks like he's thinking, 'Here we go again.' He gets personal credit for his performances, his assists, and carrying the team, but sometimes you just need to be taken out of that," the former United striker said.
Rooney believes Carrick must consider reshuffling his midfield, whether that means dropping Fernandes deeper or taking him out of the firing line entirely to freshen things up. "You can't take yourself out of the team, but sometimes someone needs to do it for you just to give you a breather. I can see the frustration building, and if this continues, it could boil over. He's not shy about voicing his opinions," Rooney warned.
He also argued that United need a more robust engine room, having been outworked and struggled for control in recent games. Rooney urged Carrick to deploy a solid midfield three to provide much-needed protection for the backline.
