The legendary Swiss crashed out in the second round at the All England Club last year, but looked every inch a seven-time Wimbledon champion as he brushed aside Muller 6-3 7-5 6-3 on Centre Court.

Only a rain delay halted Federer's progress as his passage into the next round was delayed while the roof was closed, and world number 103 Muller was given a lesson by the fourth seed.

Federer will face either Marcel Granollers or Santiago Giraldo in the third round and will go into that match full of confidence, having not dropped a set in the first two rounds.

He seized the initiative in the first set by taking his opening opportunity to break for a 3-2 lead, then secured a second break to seal the set.

The second set went with serve until a clinical Federer again made the most of his first chance to break to go two sets to the good.

Federer fired down 25 aces and produced 44 winners to treat the Centre Court crowd late in the day with some trademark elegant strokeplay as he got the job done in impressive fashion courtesy of a solitary break in the third set.
