Rennes climbed to the top of French Ligue 1 after securing a comfortable 3-0 home victory over Strasbourg in Round 8. The hosts sealed the three points courtesy of an opener from Boulaye Dia (34') and a brace from Sebastian Szymanski (41', 61').
Rennes broke the deadlock in the 34th minute when Przemyslaw Frankowski collected a pass from Mousa Al-Tamari and sent a low cross from the right flank, allowing Dia to slot the ball past Filip Jorgensen. The goal was initially ruled out for offside, but was subsequently awarded after a VAR check.
Just seven minutes later, the hosts doubled their advantage. Mahamadou Nagida whipped in a cross from the left, Dia cleverly let the ball run through his legs, and Szymanski swept it into the net with a neat left-footed finish.
The Poland international put the result beyond doubt with his second of the match in the 61st minute. Mousa Al-Tamari drove down the right wing and pulled the ball back to Szymanski, who struck a superb 20-yard effort into the net via the underside of the crossbar.
The win moves Rennes onto 16 points, taking them top of the table—one point clear of Lille and Monaco. Paris Saint-Germain, however, have the opportunity to leapfrog them when they face Lyon. Strasbourg remain in 16th place on seven points after suffering their fourth consecutive league defeat.
