Aston Martin are unlikely to receive Red Bull power units should Honda decide to exit Formula 1 in the near future. That became clear following comments from Red Bull boss Laurent Mekies, who explained that Red Bull Powertrains has no plans to supply an external team.

Red Bull's powertrain division currently supplies engines to the energy drink giant's two outfits, and expanding to a third customer team would demand additional personnel and resources that are not currently planned for.

Speculation regarding a potential switch by Aston Martin from Honda to Red Bull emerged in the British press over the weekend, following reports that team owner Lawrence Stroll is exploring alternatives to the troubled Japanese engines.

Speaking in Austin, Mekies acknowledged that other teams have shown interest in Red Bull's power units, though he refrained from mentioning Aston Martin directly.

"We received significant, yet unsolicited attention regarding our engine's performance," Mekies said. "With that came interest from multiple teams. Are we in serious negotiations with anyone to supply another team? No. We don't believe we are ready for that."

"Will that remain the case over the next five years? No, or at least I don't know what might happen over that timeframe."

According to Mekies, Red Bull's top priority right now is refining its power unit, and he does not foresee the company having the capacity to work with other teams over the next year or so.
