Real Madrid Demand Resignation of La Liga Chief Tebas over Nazi Propaganda Comparison
Real Madrid have issued an explosive and comprehensive official statement demanding the immediate resignation of Javier Tebas from his roles as La Liga president and vice-president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). The Spanish giants' fierce reaction was triggered by social media remarks from the league chief, in which he compared the club's communications strategy to the methods of Nazi propaganda minister Joseph Goebbels.
Los Blancos labelled Tebas's comments as an intolerable and morally unacceptable attack that is entirely incompatible with his institutional role in Spanish football.
Real Madrid's Official Statement
In their published communique, the club outlined five key points:
1. Unacceptable Comparison: Real Madrid consider it utterly intolerable that an individual holding two of the highest leadership positions in Spanish football uses analogies to Nazi propaganda to discredit the club, its board, and its official television channel. Tebas's clarification that he was not referencing Nazi ideology does not in any way diminish the deeply offensive and institutionally unworthy nature of his remarks.
2. Systematic Attacks: This statement is merely the latest episode in Tebas's relentless attacks against the club, its president, and its media outlets. It is unacceptable for the La Liga president to weaponise questions and analysis by independent journalists to launch insults and attribute external responsibilities to the club.
3. The Negreira Case: The club notes with concern that Tebas is attempting to undermine Real Madrid's legitimate actions regarding the Negreira case. In the absence of adequate measures from Spanish authorities, Madrid were forced to approach UEFA directly to demand a full investigation into payments made over years by FC Barcelona to the vice president of the Technical Committee of Referees. The club insists on a comprehensive reform of the refereeing system and federation structures, emphasising that rather than working to clean up Spanish football, Tebas is directing his energy towards attacking Real Madrid.
4. Lack of Neutrality: Tebas's habitual conduct demonstrates a total absence of impartiality and respect. His persistent attacks against Real Madrid and all those demanding transparency represent a major hindrance to the progress of Spanish football.
5. Demand for Resignation: Such conduct would be intolerable in any European sporting body. Real Madrid consider Javier Tebas institutionally disqualified and demand his immediate resignation from his positions at La Liga and the Spanish FA.
Real Madrid firmly asserted that they will continue to defend their rights and prestige, while demanding the full truth regarding the Negreira case and the restoration of fair play across Spanish football.
What sparked the row?
The controversy erupted after Javier Tebas compared Real Madrid's media approach to the tactics of Goebbels, albeit with the caveat that he excluded any ideological dimension. His comments came in response to articles published by journalists Tomás González-Martín and Jesús Urdiola in the outlet El Debate.
"With each passing day, it becomes harder to distinguish your journalistic work from Real Madrid's official press releases. Tomás, you have become their official mouthpiece to the extent that you use the exact same phrases I have heard from a senior executive at Valdebebas. You constantly cite 'club sources', yet there is a complete absence of any critical distance regarding what those sources feed you," the La Liga boss wrote before making the controversial historical comparison.
The long-running feud between La Liga's leadership and Real Madrid reached boiling point after the Spanish top-flight president launched a scathing critique of the club and its broadcast channel, accusing them of systematic media pressure and disinformation.
Tebas claimed that Real Madrid TV functions as an indoctrination mechanism, cherry-picking controversial refereeing decisions to portray the team as perpetual victims. According to the league chief, the strategy of relentless repetition, manufacturing an external enemy, and disregarding facts echoes classic propaganda techniques historically associated with Joseph Goebbels. Tebas clarified that the parallel applied solely to communication methods and not to any ideology or the club's supporters.
"Where is the comprehensive analysis of every round of matches? Where are the errors that harm other clubs or benefit Real Madrid? If everything were analysed objectively, it would ruin the script. And that script requires Real Madrid to always be depicted as the injured party, using the Negreira case as a routine excuse. It is easier to talk about conspiracies than to address performance issues on the pitch," Tebas said.
Real Madrid were swift to hit back with their official response—their second major statement in less than a month following a previous clash between both sides in the aftermath of the Madrid derby against Atlético.
"Our club considers it unacceptable for the president of La Liga to abuse his institutional role to attack and discredit Real Madrid at every media appearance. It is deeply concerning that the figure whose duty is to unite and defend the interests of all clubs displays such an obsession and turns our team into a constant target. His latest remarks, in which he presumes to assess our sporting strategy, show gross irresponsibility and a lack of professionalism," the club added.
