Raul Fernandez: I had not one, but two broken fingers and told no one

Raul Fernandez delivered a truly heroic ride at the Indonesian Grand Prix, competing through the pain barrier with a fractured index finger on his right hand—the finger he typically relies on for braking.

The injury forced him to adapt his riding style on the fly, yet the Trackhouse Aprilia rider still managed to cross the line in second place behind race winner Marco Bezzecchi. After the race, Fernandez revealed that he had actually suffered two broken fingers, though he did not specify which other digit was damaged.

"I couldn't have given anything more. I really don't know what to say. It was very difficult yesterday when I crashed and saw my hand. Even before going to the medical centre, I knew my finger was broken—the exact finger I normally use to brake. When I saw it, I thought I might not even be able to start today. "This morning, I realized that I actually had not one, but two broken fingers. Nobody knew; I didn't tell anyone and kept the pain to myself so I could stay focused on the race. In warm-up, I tested several braking solutions because I couldn't use my index finger, so I had to use my middle finger and start all over again. The setup, the braking markers, and the brake application—it was all extremely tough. "In the race, I felt comfortable right away. It's true that when I'm in the lead I don't usually make many mistakes, but today I made too many. I ran wide in far too many corners and quickly destroyed my rear tyre, after which I was just trying to survive. Over the final five laps, I had absolutely nothing left. I want to thank my team, my family, and my brother, who was right there by my side yesterday when I went down," the Trackhouse Aprilia rider said.
