Many girlfriends, partners, fiancées, and wives filled the Monterrey stadium, hoping to be a positive force for the Dutch players. After Cody Gakpo's hard-fought 1-0 goal, it seemed the Netherlands would secure the victory, until Moroccan defender Diop headed in the equalizer in injury time. Following extra time and a penalty shootout, the World Cup journey ended for the Dutch national team.

Alongside Marseille player Timber, Justin Kluivert and Crysensio Summerville also missed their penalties in the shootout. For Morocco, El Aynaoui and Achraf Hakimi had also failed to convert. Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen came incredibly close to saving a third penalty, but the ball still found its way into the net off his heel. Immediately after the match, Timber received comfort and support from his teammates and girlfriend, Eva Strijers. She posted a video from the stands capturing the moment the former Feyenoord player came on as a substitute.

'I am more than proud of you'

"I am more than proud of you. My lion, your strength amazes me every single day. I love you more than words can express," she wrote alongside the video on her Instagram Story. She, along with Noa van der Bij, Cody Gakpo's girlfriend, was one of the first WAGs of the Dutch team to post on social media after the Netherlands' elimination from the World Cup.

National coach Ronald Koeman briefly commented on the penalty takers. "Virgil van Dijk had cramps, and so did Summerville," Koeman said afterward. "Ultimately, Summerville wanted to take the penalty. Otherwise, Van Dijk would have taken it. I also had to substitute Cody Gakpo because he had cramps. He is our primary penalty taker. Kluivert usually takes them well too. That's why I brought him onto the field."
