The YBNL singer has been on a successful run with the release of two official singles ‘Sade’ and more recently ‘Orente’.

The singer who sings in Highlife with a mid-tempo pop twist, has put a name on the genre of music with which he operates in. He terms it ‘Urban Highlife’.

"Having dabbled into a lot of sounds before I decided to go to something different, I have done Pop, R&B, a lot of Rock…and it just wasn’t working for me. I like it, but people didn’t see it." Adekunle said.

"So I now sat down, and I think I have stress, and I’m heavy on singing Yoruba, and I happen t know a lot of indie sounds…I thought about it, ‘let me marry these two sounds together, let’s do Highlife, Folk, a little bit of Pop and Rock…I thought about it when I wanted to release ‘Sade’…I think it’s foreign, and it’s foreign and the local content, so let’s call it urban Highlife."

Adekunle’s two singles so far have been heavy on storytelling. They both take listeners through a tale of romance, which has been instrumental in the success of both songs. The singer understands this and has no plans to alter the basic lyrical makeup of his songs.

“I doubt. Because this is the difference that I have come up with, so I don’t think, I will change it." Adekunle said when asked if he will change his style. “I could get creative and add some bit of spark into it, but my sound is never going to change and my storytelling will still be there.”
