According to a survey by an MRI Networking survey,by 2020, millennials would account for one-half of the labor market, and then it comes to how do you recruit and manage young adults, since the labor market would apparently be saturated with them.
- Now a few pointers should be noted about this generation, they are very tech savvy, even the ones that don’t seem so are actually so.
- They’re very diverse and very rarely are they closed minded, sometimes they’re very open minded to a fault.
- They have a thing of loathing authority, they are a very rebellious generation.
These (and a few I left out obviously) makes for a workforce that is very lucrative and innovative and on the flip aside could be very damning. So how then do you recruit these young adults?
1. History repeats itself
This is very important. Every generation has their uniqueness; the “greatest generation” were viewed as a pack of fuzzy lightweights whom have seen no war, but they went on to forge some of the greatest careers, that’s because at some point adjustments have to be made to accommodate them not in excess but to moderation, which brings us to our second point…
2. Moderation
While the generation should be adjusted to, they shouldn’t been in such a way that it spoils them. According to my personal research, I found some companies make their working hours so flexible it most times affects the very fabric of the company and some companies on the other side are so rigid it dampens the company workforce.
Both are wrong, change should be leveraged in such a way it embraces technology, global diversity and market forces.
3. There are exceptions
We all know the stereotypes of this generation, they are difficult to control, and a lot of other stuffs as mentioned above, we know them. But as we all know, in all of these stereotypes, there are exceptions, look for these exceptions and get them, they are the exception.
4. Great people are born regardless of generation
Enabling bad behavior and compromising the core values of a company is one grave mistake companies make these days in the pursuit of talent. But if the hire is worth it, its occasional okay to hire but a company saturated with these kinds of prima donna is headed for an imminent loss. Great people make great companies, look for these great people they might be difficult to find, but they are there, don’t sacrifice your company for talent.
There you have it, there are other things of course to consider before hiring millennials, but these pointers are of the most crucial indicators and with these, you are sure to hire some of the most brilliant minds of the future generation and thereby secure the future of your company.
