The US national team is confident enough to play their own style against Belgium, Christian Pulisic declared ahead of their World Cup clash, which promises to be the co-hosts' toughest test yet. The teams face off tonight for a spot in the quarterfinals, in a rematch of their 2014 encounter where Belgium eliminated the USA after extra time. However, the quality gap between the teams is narrower this time, and Pulisic stated that the USA possesses greater confidence, despite a 5-2 friendly loss in March.
"We know what Belgium can offer. They have truly talented players who can change the game very quickly. But we're not going to completely abandon our style either. Of course, we want to be aggressive and try to hurt them, just as we've done with other teams in this tournament," Pulisic said, as quoted by BTA.
"We have confidence, regardless of the March match. We know what we can do. We believe we can hold our own – not just hold our own, but dominate in certain parts of the game against some of the best teams. . . I think we have every right to feel confident," he added.
Pulisic urged fans to continue supporting the team: "Because we're Americans, that's what we do. We believe anything is possible. We are a team that will fight and give our all, and we believe we can win. So I'd say that's a good reason to believe."
Shortly before Sunday's training session, it was confirmed that American forward Folarin Balogun would be available against Belgium, after FIFA overturned his red card suspension from the match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Pulisic described the red card as "super harsh" and welcomed FIFA's decision.
"He's obviously super happy . . . you want to be able to play in games like this," Pulisic said regarding Balogun's reaction.
