Catholic leader reveals reason for fall in Poland
On July 28, 2016, Pope Francis stumbled, during Mass, in Poland.
The Pontiff tripped and fell, while sprinkling incense around the outdoor altar at the Jasna Gora Monastery, in Czestochowa.
Telegraph reports that the Catholic leader explained the fall, in an interview with reporters on Sunday night, (July 31, 2016.)
Pope Francis blamed his fall on a distraction.
"I was looking at (an image of) the and I forgot the step," he explained.
On his lack of injuries, the 79-year-old said: "I let myself fall, and this saved me. Because if I tried to resist it, I would have gotten hurt."
The reason for the fall, the image of Madonna, also known as Our Lady of Częstochowa, is a legendary icon for Catholics.
It is believed to have miraculous qualities.
These qualities have made the image, the most popular shrine in Poland, and a favorite pilgrimage spot.
