Polish Tennis Player (24) Living a Roland Garros Fairytale Despite Financial Woes

Maja Chwalinska's Roland Garros fairytale has propelled her into the semifinals. The 24-year-old Pole defeated Russia's Anna Kalinskaya on Wednesday to reach the final four. She has never advanced this far in a Grand Slam, and she credits a sponsor of her famous compatriot, Iga Swiatek, for some of her success.

Gravel specialist Swiatek's surprisingly early exit from Roland Garros opened the door for her sponsor, Oshee, to assist fellow countrywoman Chwalinska. After her third-round victory against Maria Sakkari, Chwalinska jokingly mentioned her struggles to book a hotel for the second week of Roland Garros, citing financial constraints. Swiatek's sponsor stepped in, ensuring Chwalinska and her mother Marcela, who has been with her throughout the tournament, could remain in Paris.

That trust has paid off handsomely so far. She defeated France's Parry and then faced Kalinskaya in the quarterfinals, a player ranked nearly 100 spots higher. The Russian was no match for Chwalinska, who won 7-6, 6-3, securing her spot in the semifinals. There, she will meet the winner of the quarterfinal clash between Aryna Sabalenka and Diana Shnaider.

€750,000 and a Top-30 World Ranking

The qualifier no longer needs to worry about finances. By reaching the final four, Chwalinska is already guaranteed a substantial €750,000. The influx of ranking points will also see her make a remarkable ascent. The Pole had never before cracked the world's top 100 (her highest position being 113th), but she is now virtually ranked within the top 30 globally.

Qualifier's Journey to Main Draw via Dutch Opponent

Chwalinska's path to the main draw of the Parisian Grand Slam on clay has been remarkable. She had to start in the very first round of qualifications, where she defeated two French players. In the final qualifying round, she narrowly avoided elimination against none other than Dutch player Suzan Lamens. In a thrilling match lasting almost 2.5 hours, Lamens just fell short of knocking Chwalinska out before the tournament even began, with a score of 7-6, 7-5.
