'A tribute to my nation' by Abdul Rasheed
100 some years ago, our independent societies were rudely but beautifully merged together into a geographical representation of a nation.
56 some years ago, we were laughable granted the freedom stolen from us,
It must have made the heads of our fathers giddy,
We can't speak for them, we can't berate them, but we can learn from them,
Our beauty has been our excuse, Our strength has been our weakness.
History is handled offhandedly,
We refuse to put an end to bad decisions,
We let epiphany rule out hearts,
Our lips taste blood every time when we reminisce,
We let selected few use their quest for power to manipulate our decisions,
We have become slaves to subjectivity and sold our objectivity to the highest bidder,
We've spent 56 years on a journey, but we are as frail and broken than a 150-year-old traveller.
Some people have decided to take us down the path of entropy,
I can't stop them, neither can you, WE can stop them, let's change our perspectives, let everyone play their part, your sector is not insignificant, your ideas are not too small, your contribution is important.
This is Nigeria and it's the only home I have.
