Pierre van Hooijdonk and Rafael van der Vaart fiercely critical of missed penalties by Oranje players: 'All those idiotic things'

Pierre van Hooijdonk and Rafael van der Vaart were brutally honest after the Netherlands - Morocco match at the FIFA World Cup. The Oranje penalty takers who missed, in particular, faced harsh criticism from the analysts and former internationals. Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysensio Summerville bore the brunt of it.

"Penalties again... And how dramatically the Netherlands missed them," presenter Gert van 't Hof kicked off the discussion. Van Hooijdonk was the first to head it in. "We have a national coach (Ronald Koeman, ed.) who has taken many penalties in his life and scored almost all of them. I've never seen him do anything crazy: set up, run up, and shoot."

'All those idiotic things'

Van Hooijdonk was utterly annoyed by the run-ups of the penalty misses, none of whom took a straight line to the ball. "I expected the national coach to have told everyone: 'You can miss a penalty, but only in one way. With a normal run-up and shoot.' And now all those idiotic things... it makes me sick to my stomach." Van der Vaart 'completely agreed' with Van Hooijdonk.

"I am very disappointed in the Netherlands; it was a very poor match," said the fellow analyst. "This was well-deserved; Morocco deserved it much more and was better from minute one. You get what you deserve, from both sides." Ibrahim Afellay believes you 'cannot train for pressure' in such a penalty moment. "It's a miracle that the Netherlands even scored their penalties."
