Pierre Sage on the Brink as Crystal Palace Boss Faces First Premier League Sack of the Season
Crystal Palace manager Pierre Sage finds himself under immense pressure and could become the first Premier League manager to be sacked this season following a humiliating 5-0 defeat at the hands of fierce rivals Brighton.
The London club's hierarchy have harboured growing concerns over the French tactician's defensive approach for weeks. The Selhurst Park board reportedly considered parting ways with him back in September, though a goalless draw against Leeds bought him some breathing room. Nonetheless, ongoing defensive frailties continue to raise major alarms and leave his position hanging by a thread.
Crystal Palace currently hold the league's worst defensive record, having shipped 17 goals in just seven matches. Compounding their on-pitch struggles are reports of fractured relationships between Sage and key figures at the club, who are questioning his tactical methods. According to the Daily Mail, his decision to drop Jaydee Canvo to the bench following an underwhelming display drew frustration from chairman Steve Parish.
In the aftermath of the Brighton rout, the French boss admitted he remains uncertain whether he retains the backing of the board.
"I don't know what will happen," Sage admitted when asked about his future. "I just want to apologise to the fans because it's unacceptable for this club to show such a face, especially against this kind of opponent. We are definitely not performing at the level expected of us. I am deeply sorry because I know how much this derby means to the supporters. We didn't show that on the pitch today and failed to grasp the magnitude of this fixture."
"I will always give my best. When we lose, I'm extremely disappointed, but I take lessons from it and try to turn things around. It's the same when we win, as I know there is always room for improvement. I refuse to settle for our current state when we are capable of playing better. We have crucial work ahead, and I will get it done. This is my job, and I embrace the challenge of overcoming situations like this," he added.
