Michael van Gerwen into quarter-finals, James Wade bows out

Van Gerwen, the Dutch top seed, set up a final-eight clash with Scotsman Robert Thornton, after the pair won through the first third-round games at Alexandra Palace.

The 2014 champion was too good for Terry Jenkins on Monday, winning 4-1.

All sets bar the first went to deciding legs, and while England's Jenkins could tie the match at one-set all, Van Gerwen was clutch in the following three sets.

Van Gerwen's double-hitting was exemplary, as he hit a double 14 times from 25 attempts to ease into the last eight.

Thornton dismissed another Dutchman Benito van de Pas 4-0, continuing his flawless run at the event where he has not lost a set.

Wade, the English sixth seed, was dumped out by BDO world champion Stephen Bunting 4-1 - the latter throwing eight 180s.

Raymond van Barneveld, the 2007 winner and five-time world champion, edged out Jamie Caven 4-3 in a thriller.

Van Barneveld checked out 90 on the bullseye to progress past the Englishman.

Joining Van Gerwen and Van Barneveld as Dutch winners on Monday was Vincent van der Voort, who made light work of German teen Max Hopp 4-0.

In the first match of the day, Michael Smith arrested a two-set deficit against Northern Ireland's Brendan Dolan to win 4-2.
