Shakhtar Donetsk manager, Paulo Fonseca kept his promise by donning a Zorro mask, complete with hat and cape, for the post-match press conference after his side defeated Manchester City 2–1 in their final Champions League group game.
Fonseca, who has also been linked with the Everton job, had promised to dress up like Zorro — the fictional masked vigilante — if his side were to progress from the group stage of the Champions League.
Shaktar progressed from Group D with 12 points, at the expense of Napoli and Feyenoord. They went into their final game with only three points separating them from third-placed Napoli.
A Surprise Victory
Goals from Bernard and Ismaily dos Santos were enough to give them a needed win and hand Pep Guardiola’s men their first defeat in 25 matches.
As promised, a happy Fonseca showed up to the press conference in the Zorro costume to the amusement of everyone in the room.
“This is the most joyful press conference of my career,” Fonseca said.
“I feel great joy. I think not only Shakhtar’s supporters but all Ukrainians have to be proud of our team.”, he continued.
Up Next: The Last 16
With their second-place finish, Shakhtar will now be wary of being drawn against one of the favourites to win the Champions League.
Considering existing rules guiding the draw, Fonseca’s side may face Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Roma, Barcelona, Liverpool, Besiktas or Tottenham in the last 16.
The Champions League knockout draw will take place at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland on Monday, 11 December 2017.
It will start at 11.00 GMT. The Europa League draw will follow immediately after at 12.00 GMT.
