Onuachu sends warning to Royal Antwerp after 2-goal haul against Kortrijk
Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has sent a warning to Belgian Pro League leaders Royal Antwerp after the latest round of matches this weekend.
The KRC Genk striker was on hand for his side as they dispatched KV Kortrijk during the weekend by a 2-1 scoreline to kept touch with Royal Antwerp at the top of the table.
Genk are second in the league with 28 points from 11 matches, just two points behind a Mark van Bommel-led Royal Antwerp side.
Genk were seeking to extend their unbeaten run to 10 matches when they welcomed a motivated KV Kortrijk side that had just defeated Royal Antwerp at the Cegeka Arena on Saturday, October 8.
However, Onuachu was on hand to give Genk the lead eight minutes before halftime, getting on the end of a Mike Tresor freekick to calm the nerves of the home fans.
In a media chat reported by Goalball live, Onuachu stated that Genk should have killed off the match in the first half by scoring two or three goals.
Onuachu said: "If we had gone into the locker room with 2-0 or 3-0, the job would have been done. But in the end, we even needed a free kick to take the lead.
"A weapon, we train a lot on it. But we definitely should have scored a field goal. Now we kept the opponent in the match.
"But this Kortrijk won against Antwerp a week ago. Then you know this isn’t a bad team."
After Kortrijk equalised in the 58th minute, Onuachu restored Genk's lead from the penalty spot in the 79th minute to give the home side all three points.
With the victory, Onuachu is confident that his team would keep chasing down league leaders Royal Antwerp match after match.
“Well, we didn’t panic easily. So we kept pushing and eventually, we were rewarded. You saw after the input of Nemeth and Samatta that new energy was released," Onuachu explained.
“The fact that I could score a second time, albeit from the penalty spot, is a bonus. I feel better week after week in this system. We will continue to cling to Antwerp. On to the next assignment.”
Genk will be in action again on Saturday, October 15 when they take on Oud-Heverlee Leuven at the Den Dreef Stadium.
