Panathinaikos and Željko Obradović – It's Happening! Greeks Offer Legendary Coach Everything

Panathinaikos is without a coach after the official announcement that Ergin Ataman will no longer hold the role. Greek media report that it's time for Željko Obradović's return.

According to "Gazzetta," the most decorated European coach is the only option of interest to controversial owner Dimitris Giannakopoulos.

"The Serbian coach is a strong desire for the 'Greens,' and they are ready to go 'all in' to bring him back to the helm of Panathinaikos," the article states.

It was previously reported that Obradović was unwilling to enter any negotiations as long as Ataman was officially the coach. The moment it was announced that the Turk was departing, the door opened for a potential return of the Serbian expert to Athens.

As early as Sunday, "Sport 24" reported that Obradović would have the final say on everything if a deal were reached.

As things stand, T.J. Shorts is most likely to leave, while Kendrick Nunn, Jerian Grant, and Kostas Sloukas are confirmed to remain with the team. Vasilis Toliopoulos has also secured his place after excellent performances in the final series.

To recap, Obradović led Panathinaikos to five European titles over a 13-year period.

What Led to Ataman's Departure?

The parting of ways between Panathinaikos and Ergin Ataman occurred after three years of collaboration, following a season in which the "Greens" failed to secure trophies in either the domestic championship or the EuroLeague.

Everything was confirmed on Panathinaikos' social media, which published a video with a short message:

Thank you, Ergin.

Ataman took over Panathinaikos in the summer of 2023 as part of an ambitious three-year project to completely rebuild the club. Results came quickly: he won the EuroLeague in 2024, secured another Final Four appearance in 2025, and claimed the Greek championship title and two national cups.

"I truly had an incredible time in Athens, in this wonderful country, and I am proud to have worked with Panathinaikos and the Giannakopoulos family. And of course, I am proud to have brought these four incredible trophies in these three years. First and foremost, the EuroLeague championship title. That's why I will remember these days for the rest of my life, the incredible fun, the incredible support of the Panathinaikos family, for all of us. I am also proud of the contribution I tried to make between the two countries, between Turkey and Greece. And I am very happy for all the friendly people I have, whom I met in Greece. Not only Panathinaikos fans, but also many fans of other clubs, many people. So thank you very much for these three years we spent together. But now it's time for a new era for all of us." - Ergin Ataman

Ataman last coached Panathinaikos in the decisive game of the Greek championship – in which the "Greens" lost to Olympiacos – with the entire event overshadowed by a conflict between Tyrique Jones and Kendrick Nunn.
