US authorities have intercepted over 600 drones near stadiums and other sports venues since the start of the World Cup, according to Andrew Giuliani, director of the White House World Cup task force.
“The Department of Homeland Security and the FBI have confiscated over 600 drones since the tournament began to ensure the safety of players, officials, and fans at stadiums and fan zones,” Giuliani stated, adding that the exact number of unmanned aerial vehicles seized to date is 646.
He noted that US authorities have detected a total of 1,487 drones in no-fly zones around stadiums and fan areas. Law enforcement has identified 759 drone operators, issued 310 fines, and made 13 arrests, BTA reports.
The US Civil Aviation Administration previously announced that no-fly zones would be enforced around 23 stadiums and other locations slated to host World Cup matches and related events. Violators of these restrictions face fines ranging from $75,000 to $100,000, as well as drone confiscation.
