'Passion trumps it all,' singer faults record labels who discriminate against women

Omawumi has expressed her disapproval of record labels who do not sign female artists over doubts of their career longevity.

The singer who just released her third studio album "Timeless" under new outfit label Cabal Entertainment is calling out such labels who hold the opinion that once women get into the marital home, they lose their relevance.

Speaking with HipTV, the mother of two urged such labels to rather encourage the female artists, stating that it is unfair to assume or conclude that female musicians have shorter career span.

"That’s woman discrimination,” she said, adding, “Well, in my opinion, I don’t think women’s career are usually cut short. Some people thought that of me because I got married and I had kids.”

Shecontinued, “I don’t think that’s fair. I think passion trumps it all. If you find somebody that has passion for the work, and is good at it, encourage the person, sign the person and you will make your money.”

Omawumi is clearly citing herself as an example in this matter. She took a needed lengthy break to attend to maternal duties, the only musical thing she did during the spell was releasing a cover song of Adele's 'Hello' in 2015.

In January 2016 she released a single 'Play na play' featuring Angelique Kidjo off her then yet to be released album, and that was all that was heard from her until January 2017 when she released another single 'Butterflies' just before she finally released her album in June 2017.

Omawumi has maintained her stance on the issue, which is that women in music should not be put down by labels if they at some point decide to get married.
