Paul Pogba's Monaco adventure has officially concluded. Just one year after his arrival, the Principality club and the French international midfielder have mutually agreed to terminate his contract, which was set to run until June 2027. The announcement was made via a club statement on Wednesday.
The 2018 World Cup winner's tenure at the Monegasque club was plagued by recurring injuries, preventing him from reigniting his career. Last season, Pogba managed a mere 115 minutes on the pitch for the team that finished seventh in Ligue 1.
In their statement, both the club and the player acknowledged that "the initially set objectives were only partially met." Consequently, they opted to sever ties "before the first official match of this new season." Monaco also expressed its "gratitude to the 2018 World Cup winner for his trust and the extreme professionalism he demonstrated throughout his Monegasque journey."
It's worth recalling that Pogba, 33, arrived in the Principality in the summer of 2025, hoping to revitalize his career after it was derailed by a doping suspension that led to his departure from Juventus in 2023. However, physical issues persisted, with the midfielder playing only 45 minutes during pre-season due to right knee complaints, and later a left thigh issue during a training camp in England.
Thiago Scuro, Monaco's general director, had hinted in recent weeks that the player's departure was a possibility. Following the confirmation, the executive thanked the athlete: "On behalf of the club, I simply want to say thank you to Paul. We are very happy to have embarked on this journey together. We explained upon his arrival that it was a great challenge, a bold and ambitious gamble. While the outcome isn't what we expected, it shouldn't overshadow the enthusiasm that accompanied his return to the club, nor the fact that Paul, during this period, rediscovered the pitch and professional football."
Scuro further highlighted Pogba's contribution "in the dressing room, especially with the younger players," and his "exemplary attitude."
For his part, the French midfielder expressed gratitude for the opportunity. "I want to thank the President and the board, my teammates, all the staff, and all the fans who believed in me. Representing this club and the Principality was an incredible experience. Monaco is an exceptional club, and even though I didn't play as many games as I hoped, I will always be grateful for the opportunity to wear their colours," Pogba stated, as quoted in the club's press release.
