Formula 1 bosses have officially announced that the world championship will return to Africa at the start of the next decade with a brand-new race in Rwanda.

The event will run under the African Grand Prix banner, though its exact debut date is yet to be confirmed. It has been confirmed, however, that the race has agreed a 10-year deal with Formula 1, with the circuit set to be built roughly 40 kilometres south of the capital, Kigali.

The sport last visited the African continent in 1993, when the final South African Grand Prix took place at Kyalami. South Africa is not the only African nation to have hosted a Formula 1 round, as the 1958 season famously concluded with the Moroccan Grand Prix on a street circuit in Casablanca.
