Nottingham Forest Hold Aston Villa to a Crucial 1-1 Draw - Tottenham's Woes Deepen
The afternoon fixtures of the Premier League's 32nd matchday delivered plenty of excitement. Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa played out a 1-1 draw, while Crystal Palace snatched a dramatic 2-1 victory over Newcastle in injury time. Meanwhile, Tottenham found themselves in a precarious position after a defeat to Sunderland, leaving them entrenched in the relegation zone.
Nottingham Forest hosted Aston Villa at the City Ground, with Unai Emery's side taking an early lead. In the 23rd minute, Murillo, attempting to intercept a pass intended for an opponent, inadvertently diverted the ball into his own net.
The home side responded in the 38th minute when Hudson-Odoi found Williams, who then leveled the score.
In the second half, Nottingham Forest had the first clear opportunity. In the 62nd minute, Gibbs-White unleashed a shot, but Bizot denied him. The visitors retaliated four minutes later when the ball reached Rogers, who, however, sent his effort over the crossbar.
Aston Villa continued to press for a second goal, creating chances in the 79th minute with Watkins and again in the 85th with Maatsen, but neither could find the breakthrough, and the match concluded with a 1-1 draw.
Sunderland - Tottenham
At the same time, Sunderland hosted Tottenham, with the home side creating the first threat. In just the 7th minute, Xhaka delivered a corner that went directly towards the Spurs' goalkeeper, who managed to parry it away.
Sunderland threatened again in the 19th minute when Le Fee crossed, and Brobbey headed over the bar. In the 29th minute, Mukiele's header went just wide of the left post.
On the other hand, Roberto De Zerbi's side's biggest chance came in the 45+4th minute, with Solanke getting the ball in the box but failing to score from close range, leaving the score at 0-0.
While the first half was goalless, the visitors took the lead in the second half. In the 61st minute, Mukiele received the ball, shot from distance, and the ball deflected off a defender into the net for the final 1-0, making things increasingly difficult for Tottenham.
Crystal Palace - Newcastle
In the other match, while Crystal Palace seemed more likely to open the scoring, it was Newcastle who, with their first major chance through Osula, took a 0-1 lead in the 43rd minute.
In the second half, the hosts had their first opportunity in the 62nd minute, with Pino's shot going over the crossbar. In the 70th minute, Lerma's header struck the crossbar.
Almost ten minutes before the end, Palace found a way to equalize. Mitchell delivered a cross into the box, and Mateta was there to send the ball into the net, making it 1-1.
However, things took a dramatic turn in injury time when Crystal Palace were awarded a penalty in the 90+2nd minute. Mateta stepped up and converted, securing a 2-1 victory for his team.
