Klopp is expected to replace Julian Nagelsmann, who resigned after Germany's elimination in the World Cup round of 16. However, the former Liverpool manager is under contract until 2029 with the Red Bull group, where he serves as global head of football. "It's certainly not a done deal yet. His contract with Red Bull must also be taken into account," Watzke told ZDF television.
The DFB vice-president, along with federation president Bernd Neuendorf, is expected to travel to New York in the coming days to negotiate with Klopp. Klopp is currently working as a television pundit at the ongoing World Cup. Watzke estimated the chances of reaching a deal at "more than 50 percent."
According to Watzke, finances will be a crucial topic in the negotiations. Klopp also has private sponsorship deals that are not compatible with DFB partners. "Problems are there to be solved. Of course, we also have a certain limit when it comes to money," he said with a smile. "We expect, or at least I personally do, a small patriotic discount from Jürgen."
From a sporting perspective, he considers Klopp the ideal candidate. "He can get more out of the players, there's no doubt about that. The playing style will likely be more physical, more intense, and a bit tougher again," Watzke added, according to DPA.
