Real Madrid and goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois have reached an agreement to extend his contract by 12 months, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2028, according to reports from Fabrizio Romano and The Athletic. An official announcement is expected shortly. The 34-year-old Belgian international's current deal with the Spanish giants was set to expire at the end of the ongoing season, but there was never any indication that he would leave.

Courtois is currently in his ninth season at Real Madrid, having arrived from Chelsea in the summer of 2018. During his time at the club, he has lifted 12 trophies, including three La Liga titles and two Champions League crowns.

The goalkeeper has firmly established himself not only as Real Madrid's undisputed number one but also as one of the very best in his position worldwide, registering 98 clean sheets in the league.

Courtois remains the first-choice option for Jose Mourinho in both La Liga and Champions League fixtures, while his deputy Andriy Lunin is frequently handed opportunities in the Copa del Rey.

The Belgian boasts 115 caps for his national team, though he has made it clear that he will take a step back from international duty during Mark van Bommel's Nations League campaign.

Handing Courtois a contract extension makes complete sense from both a sporting standpoint and in maintaining the dressing room culture at the Bernabeu. Despite the severe ACL knee injury he suffered in 2023, the Belgian continues to be viewed by everyone at Real Madrid as the best goalkeeper in world football.
