Hours after Real Madrid all but conceded the Spanish league title, President Florentino Pérez still exuded optimism. On Saturday evening, Barcelona extended their lead at the top of La Liga to nine points with seven matches remaining, including an El Clásico at Camp Nou on May 10th. Furthermore, the team is on the brink of Champions League elimination after a 1-2 home defeat to Bayern Munich in their first-leg quarter-final clash at the Bernabéu.
“Here (at Real Madrid), no one gives up, and we will continue to fight, year after year, until the very last moment, to try and add more titles to the greatest trophy collection in the history of sport, which our club possesses,” Pérez stated today.
He made these remarks at a special event honoring club members who have maintained their membership for 50 to 60 years without interruption.
“Over the past 15 years, we have won 58 trophies, including six European football champion titles and three European basketball champion titles,” the president continued. “This demonstrates our level of ambition, but it also makes us reflect: to appreciate things for their true worth and to recognize the difficulties in achieving every triumph and every title.”
“Alongside these sporting successes, we have all together built the ‘Ciudad Real Madrid’ sports complex, which draws admiration from everyone who visits it. We are completing the largest transformation of the Bernabéu in recent times. A unique stadium in the world, which NFL executives have once again chosen to host one of the planet’s most spectacular events.”
“A Bernabéu with greater comfort, enhanced security, designed for our members and fans, and prepared so that no match, no event will be affected by weather conditions, transforming it into a cutting-edge, modern icon and one of the great tourist hubs of our city. A source of pride for Madrid and for Spain.”
“We should be proud of our Real Madrid – a club that continues to lead in major international economic and prestigious rankings.”
The club awarded honorary badges to members who have maintained their membership continuously for 50 years (gold) and 60 years (gold with diamonds). This year, 440 gold badges and 290 gold badges with diamonds were presented at the event.
