Fire breaks out at NNPC fuel station in Lagos
A fuel station of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) was involved in a fire incident on Monday, April 27, 2020.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) received a distress call about the fire outbreak around 1 pm, according to the agency's director-general, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.
He said the fire started while a tanker with 33,000 litres of diesel was discharging its contents into an underground tank at the fuel station.
"The agency's response team personally coordinated by myself, other emergency responders jointly fought and subsequently extinguished the flames at about 4:49 pm," he said.
Even though no human fatality was recorded, according to Oke-Osanyintolu, 30 vehicles were destroyed during the incident.
In videos shared by eyewitnesses on social media, a car lot beside the fuel station suffered significant damage with dozens of vehicles completely burnt.
The manager of the fuel station, Samuel Akinyemi, said the tanker had not commenced discharging its content when the fire ignited.
"We stationed the truck at the appropriate place for discharge, but unfortunately, a fire that I can't even say how it came about started and before we knew it, it had escalated.
"The fire started from the truck but nobody was there when it started," he told The Punch.
