England international Nico O'Reilly is brimming with motivation for the "once-in-a-lifetime opportunity" to face Lionel Messi and realize his dream of a World Cup title.
O'Reilly has established himself as manager Thomas Tuchel's first-choice left-back during the North American World Cup. However, his biggest challenge yet awaits: a semi-final clash against Argentina on Wednesday.
At 39, Messi is enjoying another sensational tournament, with his eight goals so far propelling the reigning champions into the final four.
The Manchester City defender, who was a baby when the Argentine made his World Cup debut in 2006, openly expresses his admiration, calling him "the best player to ever grace a football pitch."
"I can't wait," O'Reilly told BBC Radio 5 Live. "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. He's nearing the end of his career. For me personally, Messi is the best player to ever grace a football pitch. I'm really looking forward to this challenge."
"I know there's a bit of history between the two teams and everyone will be buzzing. We just need to match their energy and passion, and then some. Of course, they have great players. They have Messi, who I believe is the best in the world. I can't wait to play against him. It's a big challenge, a big task, but I believe in myself and we'll see what happens," O'Reilly added to talkSPORT.
The 21-year-old revealed he focuses his thoughts to achieve his goals, hoping this approach will serve him well now. O'Reilly isn't afraid to dream and has already envisioned England triumphing with the 2026 World Cup title.
"I've always dreamed and set goals to be in positions like this. Three years ago, I gave an interview saying I wanted to be in the World Cup squad and play for Manchester City. I've managed to achieve both of those goals and dreams. It's always been on my mind, and now I'm here, enjoying every minute," O'Reilly shared.
"This is huge in my life and career. I always believe and dream of the next steps. Every night I imagine the celebrations if we succeed, coming home, seeing everyone happy... It would be incredible. I just have a winner's mentality. I always want to win. If you believe in something, dream about it, talk about it, and have everything you need to put it into practice, you can achieve it," the England international concluded.
