NGO takes sustainable environment campaign to schools with free educational materials
The Nature’s Treasure, a not-for-profit organisation has donated over 500 writing materials and 24 school bags for pupils in three public schools, within Ikorodu Local Government Area of Lagos State.
Pupils of Etunrenre Primary School, C and S Primary School, Idiroko Ikorodu and Erikorodo Primary School, Ikorodu, were the beneficiaries of the organisation’s back-to-school program, targeted at supporting the needy in the area.
The NGO also sensitised the pupils on their roles, in preserving nature, by adopting green habits and embracing positive environmental consciousness.
While addressing the pupils, the Convener, an environmental activist, Maram Olawale-Bakare, noted that the organisation was dedicated to giving charity to the needy, championing their rights and promoting environmental sustainability.
She said, “Today, we have come to share love with you because you are part of nature and you ought to be cherished. We believe in the act of giving in order to put smiles on your faces. This is our first back-to-school programme and we won't stop at this. We will be donating 500 notebooks, including pens and school bags. We shall continue to reach out to you as we receive more from our donors too. I want to encourage you all to believe in yourselves, strive for success and be ready to help others, you are all treasured.”
The convener also sensitized the pupils on maintaining a clean and sustainable environment, stressing that they were not too young to champion positive change in their environment.
“You are the leaders of today, therefore, change starts from you. Desist from all forms of harmful acts like waste burning, littering and open defecation. Apply the three Rs of reducing the amount of waste you generate, re-using the things you already purchase and separating items that are recyclable such as pet bottles, cans, papers and sachet nylons for recycling purposes. Conserve the resources around you by not wasting water running from the tap, put off lights and fans, trash your waste properly inside waste bins and keep your environment clean always,” she said
Also speaking, the NGO’s Media and Publicity Director, Fatimah Abdul, took the pupils through the proper and improper acts of waste disposal practices.
While encouraging the pupils to share the message with their parents at home, she enjoined them to shun illegal waste disposal practices such as; littering, waste burning, patronage of cart pushers, dumping of refuse into drainage channels as well as transporting waste from homes to road medians.
