New Drama in Serbian Basketball: KLS Season Start in Jeopardy!

The start of the new Serbian Basketball League (KLS) season for 2026/2027 faces serious challenges, as key documents required for the competition to begin remain unapproved due to blockades within both the leadership and among the clubs.

According to unofficial information obtained by Mozzart Sport, the President of the KLS Association sent an official request on July 30th to all participating clubs, asking them to declare their stance on proposed decisions. This action followed the July 28th Presidency meeting, and a subsequent 48-hour re-vote, both of which failed to secure the two-thirds majority required for crucial decisions.

The proposals presented to the clubs included the competition calendar, competition regulations, disciplinary rules, and the financial plan, all essential for the season to commence.

Clubs were given until midnight on July 31st to electronically vote on each proposal. However, the vote count once again revealed disagreement and a deep division within Serbian basketball. The necessary two-thirds majority was not achieved even among all clubs.

Thirteen clubs voted in favor of the proposed acts: Kolubara, Mega, Sloboda, Sloga, Mladost, Borac, SPD Radnički, Metalac, Niš, Vojvodina, BKK Radnički, Crvena zvezda Meridianbet, and Tamiš. Spartak, Zlatibor, OKK Beograd, and Dynamic voted against, while Borac Zemun, Partizan, Čačak 94, and Hercegovac abstained. Representatives from KK FMP did not cast a vote.

Due to the unsuccessful voting at both levels, and in accordance with Article 40 of the Association's Statute, decision-making authority now transfers to the league's operational staff. The competition director, with mandatory input from the commissioner for officiating, will now determine the fate of the calendar, regulations, and financial plan.

The Club Association states that all participants will be promptly informed of the director's final decision. However, it remains to be seen whether this resolution will satisfy the dissenting clubs or if it will lead to an even greater crisis before the season begins.
