National Team: Farewell to Roberto Martínez, Proença Prepares for Jorge Jesus Era
Roberto Martínez is set to depart from his role as national team coach, a position he has held since January 2023, when he succeeded Fernando Santos after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Spaniard's contract is nearing its end and, as A BOLA understands, will not be renewed, following Portugal's elimination by Spain in the round of 16 at the 2026 World Cup.
Jorge Jesus will be Roberto Martínez's successor. The 71-year-old Portuguese coach is, according to A BOLA, the FPF president's chosen candidate to lead the team through the Euro 2028 and 2030 World Cup cycles, which Portugal will co-host with Spain and Morocco. Jorge Jesus is currently a free agent, having left Al Nassr at the end of last season. Upon the national team's return to Portugal, he will meet with Pedro Proença to finalize the terms of the contract that will make him Portugal's new head coach.
