The national team, making their championship debut, advanced to the knockout stage, showcasing a new image for the country, according to the head of state.
The president noted that the national team's success coincided with the country's 51st anniversary of independence, celebrated by Cape Verde on July 5th. "There are no coincidences in the nation's history. We overcame doubts and unfavorable predictions to build a Cape Verde that is respected worldwide today. The 'Blue Sharks' deserve the highest honor, and Cape Verde will therefore award them the Amílcar Cabral Medal," Neves was quoted by the Lusa agency.
He believes the footballers' performance could signal a new beginning and impetus for other sectors of society. The state, along with coach Bubista and other members of the coaching staff, plans to analyze the factors behind the national team's success. "We must apply this formula to healthcare, education, public administration, and business as well," the president declared.
In Group H, Cape Verde drew with Spain (0-0), Uruguay (2-2), and Saudi Arabia (0-0), securing second place to advance. In the Round of 16, they faced defending champions Argentina, pushing them to extra time before ultimately losing 2-3. Upon their return home, thousands of fans greeted them at Nelson Mandela International Airport, and the team subsequently enjoyed a celebratory parade through the streets of the capital, Praia.
