"I'm encouraged by the work we've put in during pre-season training, and also in the matches. I'm really looking forward to the first game, and it's going to be a tough one," Carrick stated.

He offered an injury update: "Matthijs de Ligt has been out for a long time but is now back in training. He won't feature in the upcoming match, but he's in good shape and improving. Ben (Šeško) has resumed training, which is another positive. Mason (Mount) is very close but remains a doubt for the weekend."

Regarding their first opponents, Hull, he commented: "There are no favorites at the start of the season. When you play against a newly promoted side away from home, you're in for a very, very tough game. I've been involved in such matches and I know what's at stake. They'll be fired up on Saturday, and we need to be ready for that."

Carrick clearly intends to rely on Marcus Rashford, despite ongoing speculation about his future: "He joined training with Kobbie (Mainoo) and Licha (Martinez) essentially in Dublin. He's enjoying his football, looks in excellent condition, strong, and ready to play. I'm very pleased with him."

When asked about a potential transfer for Carlos Baleba from Brighton, the manager responded: "We're trying to strengthen the squad and we're working on it. We'll try to make the most of the opportunities that arise to finish the transfer window stronger than we started it."

Asked if Manchester United could challenge for the title, Carrick said: "I think that would be a big leap. What I say doesn't matter. I'll never say we can't challenge. I don't believe in that. What matters is what we do, what we believe in as a group. Our form last season gives us a lot of confidence, but we know we need to take another step. We have the potential to achieve things. We're giving our all. We have to believe that we are a good team."
